Meal Prep Whilst on Staycation with your Dog
Cooking For Your Dog on Staycation
So, Kuro is on a very mixed diet. She has some dog food, kibbles (not an issue) and cooked food. This presents a wee bit of an issue when we are on a staycation and have to cook for our dog. Most hotels don’t provide a microwave (except serviced apartments or super duper premium rooms), likely because they want you to patronize their restaurants or room service. Which would be fine except even the pet-friendly hotels may not actually have any cooked food for your dog. We truly wished they had a microwave at least.
Nonetheless, this is how we got by with our recent staycation.
NO FROZEN FOOD
If you do meal preps, unfortunately, with frozen food, this might be a huge problem because the mini-bar fridge does the bare minimum to keep your food cold, but it would not keep your frozen food…frozen. So do make sure you do meal preps that are okay with refrigeration but not freezing. Ideally, pre-cook all the food that you need for your trip. It is unlikely your staycation would go beyond 3 days, and these methods do work, however if you are staying longer, you might want to see if there are other alternatives.
THE KETTLE
The kettle which most hotels provide presents the perfect opportunity to be able to prepare simple meals. Well, for one thing, it’s very easy to boil an egg in the kettle and you are able to control whether you want a soft boiled or fully boiled egg. This is one of the easiest things to prepare! Especially if your dog loves their eggs as much as Kuro does. The egg can be eaten on its own or mixed with kibbles and other food.
THE WATERBATH METHOD
Now, you would still need the kettle for this. You want to make sure the food that you prepare is already pre-cooked at home. What you do is to make sure you have 2 containers. Ideally, a glassware as your base, and a tupperware to cook your food. You will need the lids. Prepare your food mix in the tupperware and place the rupperware in the glassware container. What you’re then going to do is to boil a full kettle’s worth of water. Once it’s boiled, pour the piping hot water into the glassware so it creates a waterbath around your tupperware. Put on the lid for the glassware to ensure that no/less heat gets to escape. Due to the hot water and the steam emitted from it being trapped in the vacuum that is your glassware, your food will be reheated and ready to be served to your best friend.
WASHING UP
Now most hotels also do not provide you any dishwashing liquid or sponges. You would need to pack this along with you as well. Get a travel sized bottle to store your dishwashing liquid from home and bring along a sponge too. If you don’t travel light, you can cut your standard sponge in half. This is also a much better way to keep your staycation sustainable as well. With this, do bring your own refillable mug or water bottles for your dog and yourself too.
We hope with these easy methods, you can be assured, you won’t have any issues with your dog and its meal whilst on a staycation.
