Dehydrated Food

Dehydrated food offers a lot of benefits, not just to us humans, but to dogs as well. The process of dehydrating food is using low heat and steady airflow, for many hours dehydrating removes enough moisture from food through evaporation to inhibit the growth of bacteria, yeast, and mold. Moisture is the enemy here. For all meats, the very obvious layers or chunks of fat is also the enemy as they will retain moisture, which can cause it to spoil, or go rancid, and affect the rest of the meat.

Fun Fact:
As an example, to make a 60g pack of Gyū by Kuro Snacks, it would have taken at least 250g of beef (it’s usually 76% moisture)! That is after as much fat is removed as possible. The dehydration process also takes about 12-16 hours, just to be safe and to retain its test and nutritional benefits.

Here are some of the benefits that we can all enjoy with dehydrated food.

Delicious
Dehydrated food can be meat, fruit, vegetables or a combination of different food. Dehydrated is literal, it means we strip all the moisture out of the food. When the moisture doesn’t water down the taste, the food becomes rich and tastes even greater. When they are home cooked and natural, it can be a lot fresher than most commercial or industrial made food minus all the harmful additives and preservatives.

Natural
We’ve learnt quite a bit of that in Snacks Care where we noted that preservatives like Ethoxyquin, Propylene Glycol, BHT - Butylated Hydroxytoluene, known as BHT, and BHA - Butylated Hydroxyanisole, whilst approved for food use, can cause our dogs (and cats) a lot of problems in the long run (and imagine what they do to us as well). These preservatives are largely used to extend the shelf-life of food and keep the perishable ingredients from turning bad. They can however, also alter the natural case of food, sometimes it’s more appealing but for the discerning dogs like Kuro, they rather stay clear away from it, and for good reason too. But with naturally dehydrated food, you won’t have to bother as much with the ingredient list on packages and worry about how those unpronounceable chemicals are affecting your dog or your body. Fresh ingredients when dehydrated can last for 6 months or even more, as long as we take care of them, particularly in our humid climate in Singapore.

Mobile
